As we are in the process of closing our Foundation, please note that we will not be accepting or processing donations.
To Our HandiBus Friends and Supporters September 10, 2018
We are sending this note to advise you that the Calgary HandiBus Foundation will be closing in early 2019.
It was three years ago that Calgary HandiBus moved the operation of our buses to Calgary Transit, which put this essential service in a sustainable environment, with proper resources and support. Our customers have told us the service has been better than ever and we are very proud of that.
Over the past three years, we have continued to buy buses for Calgary Transit Access to use in delivering this critical service to enhance and enrich the lives of citizens with disabilities and mobility challenges, where publicly-available services and programs are challenged to provide the required support. We have also purchased buses and vans for The Janus Academy, a specialized school for children with Autism, as well as Renfrew Educational Services, which provides educational opportunities and support for children with disabilities.
The past several years have been challenging for many not-for-profit organizations in Calgary, ourselves included. Donations have been down significantly and many of the organizations we have tried to partner with lack the financial support to provide the operational resources necessary to safely operate the vehicles we might purchase for them.
The cost of continuing to operate our charity, given our ongoing level of donations, is not a responsible use of the resources provided by our donors; accordingly, we have made the difficult decision to cease operations in early 2019. Any funds remaining in our HandiBus Foundation at the date of closure will be donated to The Calgary Foundation and other not-for-profits. This will provide ongoing funding to organizations providing transportation and mobility options for the disabled community in Calgary.
Since our inception in 1971-72, Calgary HandiBus received $28.5 million in donations, allowing us to purchase 437 buses, and with The City of Calgary we provided over 16 million trips!
We sincerely thank you for your support of Calgary HandiBus and hope you share our pride in the difference we have made in the lives of Calgarians with disabilities.
